Encyclopedia Cascadia is an online encyclopedia, historical gazetteer, and digital resource library dedicated to the Pacific Northwest. Spanning British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington State, our platform connects the region’s place names, geographic features, historical figures, milestones, and literature into a single, unified knowledge graph.

Our Mission

To make the place names, toponyms, history, and literature of the Pacific Northwest discoverable and accessible in modern, mobile-ready digital formats. Rather than treating state lines or the 49th parallel as barriers to research, we provide a unified bioregional view of the Pacific Northwest Coast and interior.

What We Do: Layering Narrative Over Geography

Standard government gazetteers provide coordinates, elevations, and feature classifications—but rarely the human story. Encyclopedia Cascadia pairs a massive, cross-border geospatial index with primary and secondary historical scholarship:

Cross-Border Harmonization

We index over 150,000 official and local place name entries across BC, ID, OR, and WA. Official U.S. records from the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) and Canadian data from the BC Geographical Names Office (BCGNO) are normalized using Statistics Canada standards for seamless cross-border discovery.

Toponymy & Etymology

Place names are foundational to local identity. We document why places carry their names—tracing Indigenous geographies, maritime surveys, railroad survey camps, and early pioneer homesteads.

Preserving Vanished Settlements

Beyond active municipalities, our database preserves the memory of abandoned boomtowns, ephemeral logging camps, historic post offices, and settlements lost to coastal erosion or bypassed railroads.
