Published in 1920 by anthropologist Leo Joachim Frachtenberg, Myths of the Alsea Indians of Northwestern Oregon is a vital ethnographic compilation preserving the oral traditions and linguistic structures of the heavily displaced Alsea people. Working under the auspices of the Bureau of American Ethnology during the frantic era of "salvage anthropology," Frachtenberg meticulously transcribed cosmologies, animal tales, and cultural taboos directly from some of the tribe's very last fluent speakers.
