Examination of contest for the Columbia Country, the Oregon Crisis, the gold rush crises, the dispute over the San Juan Islands, and the defense of the Pacific colonies in a decade of Anglo-Americanism (1861-1871) from the perspective of the Royal Navy's involvement. Esquimalt Naval base's evolution as the Pacific headquarters of the Royal Navy to meet the changing strategic requirements of the whole Pacific area is considered in detail. The repercussions of the Crimean War and the rise of German and United States naval power on the alignment of British forces in the Pacific are also considered.
