The region dealt with contains those parts of North Pacific Slope where British interests have prevailed. Before the year 1846 this included the valley of the Columbia River, and also, in a sense, the Snake River Country. The backbone of the narrative, which extends from the early maritime fur-trade days of the eighteenth century down to the present, is largely economic in character.
