Peter Corney 1760-1835
English sailor Peter Corney served as the chief officer aboard the schooner Columbia for the North West Company, completing multiple pivotal voyages to the Columbia River between 1813 and 1818. During his extensive time navigating the Pacific Northwest coast, he traded for sea otter furs, interacted heavily with local Indigenous communities, and supplied the early trading outpost of Fort George, formerly Astoria. His meticulously detailed journals were later published in 1821, providing one of the most valuable firsthand historical accounts of the region's early maritime fur trade, Native coastal culture, and the intense commercial rivalry between British and American interests.
