Hoei Shin 0475-

Hoei Shin was a fifth-century Chinese Buddhist monk who famously documented his legendary trans-Pacific voyage to a distant eastern land he called "Fusang." For centuries, various historians and geographers have theorized that his detailed accounts of Fusang's rugged coastline and native flora described the Pacific Northwest, specifically the shores of present-day British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. According to the report he presented to the Chinese Imperial Court in 499 CE, he and a group of fellow monks spent several years traveling along this distant coast, observing the local indigenous populations and sharing Buddhist teachings. Although mainstream modern archaeology largely dismisses the theory that his expedition actually reached the Pacific Northwest, Hoei Shin's enduring narrative remains one of the most famous early legends of pre-Columbian contact with the North American continent.
