John B Wyeth 1815-
John B. Wyeth was born in 1800 in Hallowell, Maine. He was the son of Nathaniel Wyeth, a merchant and fur trader, and Elizabeth Bound. Wyeth grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and adventurers. His father had explored the Pacific Northwest in the early 1800s, and his brother, Nathaniel J. Wyeth, led an expedition to Oregon in 1832.
In 1832, John B. Wyeth joined his brother's expedition to Oregon. The expedition was a failure, but Wyeth's experiences in the West inspired him to write a book about his journey, titled Oregon, or A Short History of a Long Journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the Region of the Pacific by Land. The book was published in 1833 and is considered an important historical document of the early American West.
After his return from Oregon, Wyeth continued to be involved in the fur trade. He also became a merchant and a banker. In 1840, he founded the Wyeth Manufacturing Company, which produced textiles and other goods. Wyeth was a successful businessman, and he amassed a considerable fortune.
John B. Wyeth died in 1874 at the age of 74. He was a pioneer of the American West and a successful businessman. His book Oregon is a valuable historical document of the early days of the Oregon Trail.
