Caroline C. Leighton 1838-
Caroline C. Leighton was an American author and traveler whose detailed journals provided a rare and culturally sensitive female perspective on pioneer life in the Pacific Northwest following the Civil War. Traveling extensively through Washington Territory, British Columbia, Oregon, and California between 1865 and 1881 alongside her husband, she vividly chronicled her encounters with diverse regional populations, including Indigenous tribes, pioneer settlers, and Chinese immigrants. Her observations were compiled into the influential 1883 book Life at Puget Sound, which remains a vital historical travelogue and ethnographical account of the region's rapidly transforming social landscape during the late nineteenth century.
Massachusetts born, she moved with her husband, a customs agent, to Washington Territory from 1865-75; then to San Francisco for six years, then back to New England.
