ILWACO, a town in Pacific County, near the mouth of the Columbia River. The petty Indian chief for whom the town was named told Isaac Whealdon that his name was El-wah-ko Jim. He was more than ordinarily intelligent and was very proud of his wife, who was a chief's daughter. (Mrs. L. D. Williams, daughter of Isaac Whealdon, in Names MSS., Letter 178.) A former name of the place was Unity, founded by J. L. Stout. (History of the Pacific Northwest, Volume II., page 588.)
