The area was first settled around 1912 when mine workers located their families here; by 1913 the area was known variously as the Marshall District, Oasis and Johnson's Corner (origins unknown). The first school was named Marshall School; the school operated through the 1920's, and today the site is marked with a plaque installed by the Texada Island Heritage Society.
