Puntledge (Village) adopted 10 July 1923 on 92F/11 as labeled on Reference Map 2C "Vancouver Island, Northerly" (1919) as proposed by W.H. Boyd. Feature type change 7 October 1948 to Puntledge (settlement). Likely named in association with the local name for Puntledge River.

Initial post office closed, but re-opened 1 February 1943. Closed again 31 October 1946 (likely recorded in L.I. 19522814). According to 1961 census there were 31 people living at Puntledge (settlement). According to E.P. Creech, by February 1965 the settlement was abanoned, "when mine closed, 'everyone' left." June 1966 recorded that there is "nothing here", and in Feburary 1967 the settlement was labeled as abandoned on 92F. 1971 census data recorded the population as 17, and the 1976 census indicated the population being 34. 1981 census recorded the population of Puntledge (settlement) as being 34.

Letter from Post Office Department, 20, November 1942 to establish a new Post Office under the name of Puntledge in the Electoral District of Comox-Alberni, B.C. The proposed office would be located 1.8 miles east of Beaver, 4 miles southwest of Courteney and 6.2 miles northwest of Cumberland, B.C. The name which is being assigned to this office owes its origin to the name of a nearby river. This was also the name of aPost Office which was located in the above districtand which was closed on the 31 August, 1916.
