O'Brian Bay (Post Office) identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, located on Kinnaird Island. Name changed to Sullivan Bay (Post Office) 7 August 1947, effective 23 September 1947, still located on Kinnaird Island. Identified as Sullivan Bay (Post Office and Streamer Landing) in the 1953 BC Gazetteer, still located on Kinnaird Island. Altered application 4 September 1958 on C.3570. Form of name changed to Sullivan Bay (locality) 15 March 1983 on 92L/15.

O'Brian Bay Post Office was opened 1 April 1924, situated on L.486, Kinnaird Island (significance of name not recorded); closed temporarily in 1945; reopened as Sullivan Bay Post Office 23 September 1947, still situated on Kinnaird Island; relocated to Blk 6, North Boughton Island c1956. T.J. Sullivan was an Irish-born settler in the area.
