Origin Notes and History of City of Orting

ORTING, a city eighteen miles southeast of Tacoma. The name is said to mean city on the prairie. (Pierce County Auditor, Annual Report, 1909, p. 54). The townsite plat was filed August 8,1887 by F.E. Eldridge. Orting Lake is northeast of the city on property owned by the Weyerhaeuser Corporation.
