Hullcar (settlement) adopted 1 October 1959 on 82L/NW, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915 et seq. Form of name changed to Hullcar (locality) 29 November 1984 on 82L/11.
Hullcar Post Office was opened 1 August 1894, David Crane postmaster until post office closed 7 February 1913.
Named by James T. Steele of Grafton Farm, settler in the 1870's who brought the first thoroughbred stock from Eastern Canada to BC. [the name] comes from the Indian name of a nearby rock bluff (sometimes called Salmon Valley Mountain) which Alexander Leslie Fortune spelt Hurrahar, meaning "big rock". (12th Report of the Okanagan Historical Society, 1948, citing their 6th Report. p.144)
