"The settlement was the source of much of the firewood for riverboats stopping at White's Landing supply depot at the turn of the century. Firewood for the boats was produced by Chinese residents and many of them were engaged in felling trees and chopping firewood [on the island downstream from the settlement.] The sound of their efforts resembled that of woodpeckers - and the name Woodpecker Island stuck." (as told in April 1982 to K. Weir, Government Agent, by Arnold Davis (c1910- ), lifelong resident and one-time sheriff of County of Cariboo, file C.1.60.)
