Keremeos (Town) adopted 6 October 1936 on Geological Survey sheet 420A, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915. Form of name changed to Keremoes (Post Office & Station) 7 October 1954 on 82E/SW. Incorporated as a Village Municipality 30 October 1956. Subsequently confirmed as Keremoes (Village) (date not cited).

Hudson's Bay Company trading post established here in 1860, after Fort Okanogan (in American territory) was closed, and staff & stock were transferred here. Keremeos HBC post closed in 1872. Keremeos Post Office was opened 1 August 1887, Thomas Daly postmaster.

An [Indigenous] word meaning "wind channel in the mountains". This is the only [Indigenous] place name in the Interior that contains the letter " R ". Another meaning given for the name is "beautiful stream crossing the flats." (BC Historical Quarterly, Vol 2, p 77.)
