"Summerland (Municipal District)" adopted in the 18th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 31 March 1924, p.357, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915. Incorrectly adopted as Summerland (Town) 6 October 1936 on Geological Survey sheet 420A, Kelowna. Form of name changed back to Summerland (District Municipality) 6 October 1955 on 82/SW, to conform with the incorporated status.

Named in 1902 by J.M. Robinson, who was promoting a land subdivision on the lakeshore that year. Sumerland Post Office was opened 1 November 1902, Frederick S. Moule postmaster. Robinson served as reeve following incorporation of "The District of Summerland" 21 December 1908.

Founded, and named for it's climate and horticulture by John Moore Robinson who promoted a land subdivision in 1902. "The Corporation of the District of Summerland," incorporated December 21, 1906; first reeve John Moore Robinson. West Summerland Post Office was opened May 1, 1910, James H. Ritchie, PM. (12th Report of the Okanagan Historical Society, 1948, citing Andrew, 9, 10, 15, 16, 20).
