Sewell Inlet (Post Office & Steamer Landing) adopted 30 June 1971 on BC map 103B-C. Form of name changed to Sewell Inlet (Community) 30 November 1982 on 103B/13. Named in association with Sewell Inlet.

Sewell Inlet Post Office was opened 1 December 1971. "Vessel calls at Sewell Inlet sailing of Sept 10, and every alternate week thereafter." (Northland Navigation Company timetable #36, 30 August 1971.)

"...the origin of the name seems to have been lost. Early newspapers referred to [the inlet] as Jewell Inlet. A government trail was cut to the head of the inlet in 1908, and several prospectors built cabins in the area during the pre-WWI QCI mining boom. Rayonier Ltd moved its Moresby logging camp, formerly at the head of Cumshewa Inlet, to this site in 1960, and logging roads connected Sewell Inlet to Newcombe Inlet on Tasu Sound on the west coast of Moresby Island. Western Forest Products Ltd, which bought Rayonier in 1980, continued to operate a large camp at Sewell Inlet until 2005, when the company's harvesting areas in the region were taken over by BC Timber Sales. At its height the community boasted a store, school, post office, pub and bowling alley..."
