Bella Bella (Air Base) was adopted 7 October 1948 on C.3787, not Bellabella (Air Base) as spelled on preliminary maps. Name changed to Shearwater (settlement) 4 September 1952 on 103A. Form of name changed to Shearwater (locality) 30 June 1982 on 103A/1. The dual or combination name "Shearwater (locality)-(Bella Bella PO)" was adopted 28 March 1988 on 103A/1. Dual name dismantled July 1993 by Ottawa into the original components, Shearwater (locality) and Bella Bella (PO); both are at the same location, and both are to be labelled on BC maps.
