Origin Notes and History of Deroche

Deroche (Post Office and Station) adopted 12 December 1939 on 92 SE. Form of name changed to Deroche (community) 15 December 1982 on 92 G/1.
Deroche Post Office was opened 1 October 1891. Note that Deroche Landing (steamer landing) was about 2 miles from here, on the Fraser River.
After Joseph Deroche, the first settler here, arriving in the early 1880s; he came to BC from California in 1860; died 19 March 1922, age 99.
First name of the place was Derocier, but CPR named their station after an old Frenchman who lived here. The family was still living here in 1924 according to advice provided to Denys Nelson, author of Place Names of the Delta of the Fraser River, 1927.
