Squamish-Lillooet Regional District Regional District
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) is a local government federation in British Columbia, Canada. It is located in the southwestern part of the province, and its boundaries encompass the traditional territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), St'át'imc and Líl'wat Nations. The SLRD's history dates back to the 1860s, when the region was a major hub for the gold rush. The town of Lillooet, in particular, grew rapidly during this time, and for a brief period it was the largest city west of Chicago. After the gold rush, the SLRD's economy shifted to logging, mining, and agriculture. In recent years, tourism has become an increasingly important part of the region's economy. The SLRD is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including bears, wolves, cougars, and salmon. The region is also home to several important historical sites, including the Lillooet Stockade and the St'át'imc Heritage Village.
