Anvil Island (Post Office) adopted 3 March 1949 on C.3586; form of name changed to Anvil Island (Steamer Landing) 3 May 1951. Identified as Anvil Island (Landing) in the 1953 BC Gazetteer, then as Anvil Island (Settlement) in the 1966 BC Gazetteer. Form of name changed to Anvil Island (Locality) 13 May 1983 on 92 G/11.
Anvil Island Post Office opened 1 August 1896, Fred Keeling, postmaster. The island, in turn, had been named 14 June 1792 by Captain George Vancouver, "from the shape of the mountain that composes it".
