Porteau Landing (Settlement) adopted 4 October 1945 on C. 3579 (file H.2.45). Name changed to Glen Eden (Settlement) 4 June 1953 as petitioned by residents (file V.2.50). Confirmed as Glen Eden (settlement) and Porteau (station) 3 April 1959 on 92G. Glen Eden (settlement) rescinded 15 January 1982 on 92G/11 as advised by Department of Highways. Porteau (station) changed to Porteau (locality) 31 March 1983 on 92G/11.

Schooner Harbour labelled on Geological Survey sheet 997A, Nanaimo and New Westminster Mining Divisions, 1908. Porteau Post Office opened 1 February 1912, situated on Lot 2076; PGER station named Porteau, as labelled on BC map 2B, 1914; post office was closed 11 December 1928. "Glen Eden Park is a small settlement in Porteau Cove..." (BC Pilot Vol I, 1965, p.287)

The name was suggested around 1908 by a Mr. Newberry of Deeks Sand and Gravel Company. It is an adaptation of the French "porte d'eau", meaning a "water gate".
