Rutland (town) adopted 6 October 1936 on Geological Survey sheet 420A, Kettle River, as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915. Form of name changed to Rutland (Post Office & Station) 6 October 1955 on 82SW; located at the junction of CNR and CPR lines. Form of name changed to Rutland (community) 29 November 1984 (file 203-2).

"After John ("Hope") Rutland, who came from Australian in the 1890s and wheat-farmed here. In the 1900s he sold to a syndicate which subdivided the land and adjacent land and named the district after him." (12th Report of the Okanagan Historical Society, 1948, citing advice from F.M. Buckland).
