Kitimat (Village) adopted in the 18th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 31 March 1924, as labelled on BC map 3M, 1916. Name rescinded 4 November 1948 on 103NE, as the settlement was no longer inhabited (file P.1.48). Re-instated as Kitimat (Post Office) 6 February 1952 at 54 01 - 128 41 on 103I. Incorporated as a District Municipality 31 March 1953, called District of Kitimat. Incorrectly identified as Kitimat (Post Office & Steamer Landing) in the 1953 BC Gazetteer. Kitimat (District Municipality) confirmed 2 September 1966 on 103I.

Kitamaat Post Office opened 1 March 1900 located on IR 2; name changed to Kitamaat Mission Post Office 1 May 1908. On the same day (1 May 1908) Kitamaat Post Office was opened on Lot 73; spelling changed to Kitimat Post Office sometime in December 1908. Kitimat Post Office closed 15 October 1918. In the early 1950's the Aluminum Company of Canada (Alcan) built a smelter here. Kitimat Post Office was re-established 8 May 1952 situated on Lot 90 (near the smelter), following CNR's announcement that a steamer landing would be established here (December 1951 letter, Ottawa file 103I). Kitimat Post Office office was re-located to Lot 6063 (1 December 1954 ?) and renamed Kitimat Postal Station A. Kitimat Postal Station A was re-located to Lot 6032 11 February 1957 and renamed Kitimat Nechako Centre Postal Station.

Nechako, Kildala and Whitesail are the three neighbourhoods that make up the Kitimat District Municipality residential area, although Nechako is the only true urban community; the others more closely resemble subdivisions.
