Butedale (Settlement) adopted 14 June 1946 on 103 SE, as labelled on BC map 1A, 1912. Form of name changed to Butedale (PO and Steamer Landing) in 1966 BC Gazetteer, since changed to Butedale (Landing).

"The Haisla name for Butedale is C'idexs (meaning 'runny diarrhia') with probable reference to the effects of the abundant berry bushes in the area. A midden site remaining from a pre-contact Haisla village is located at the foot of Butedale Falls. The cannery site and surrounding area comprise a Haisla stewardship area at the southern boundary of Haisla traditional territory." (information contributed February 2007 by anthropologist James V.
