Origin Notes and History of Klemtu
References to Klemtu that document the origin of its place name
"Klemtu (Village), not Klemtoo, nor China Hat" was adopted in the 15th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 31 March 1917. Identified as Klemtu (Post Office) in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, listing as alternate names Klemtoo, China Hat and Kitasoo (villages). Identified as Klemtu (Post Office & Steamer Landing) in the 1953 BC Gazetteer. Form of name changed to Klemtu (Community) 14 January 1983 on 103/10.
Klemtu Post Office was opened 16 June 1927.
Formerly called "China Hat" because of the shape of Cone Island which protects it. It gets its present name from "Klemdoo-oolk," a Tsimpsean word meaning "impassable". From both north and south the bay on which the village stands looks like part of a passage, but it is not.
