By public ceremony in 1991, the Kitwancool Band changed their name to Gitanyow Band; at the time band administration advised that although the Indian reserve name would change, the locality would likely remain known as "Kitwancool". However by special resolution in 1994, the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs renamed their organization, to be known henceforth as Sim-Gi-Get'm Gitanyow, and requested that maps and toponymic records now identify the locality on Kitwancool IR 1 as "Gitanyow" (2 May 1994 letter, file N.1.53).
