Field (Station) adopted 1 March 1904 in the 5th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada. Identified as Field (Post Office & Flag Station) in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, then Field (Post Office) in the 1953 Gazetteer. Confirmed as Field (Post Office & Station) 1 May 1958 on 82N/8. Form of name changed to Field (community) 31 March 1983 on 82N/8.
Field Post Office was opened in 1886.
Named by CPR railway officials in 1884, after Cyrus West Field (1819-1892), an American merchant who had laid the first Atlantic cable, 1858, and a second line in 1866; Mr. Field was visiting the Canadian Rockies the year that CPR named the station and nearby mountain after him.
