Origin Notes and History of Five Mile
References to Five Mile that document the origin of its place name
Five Mile (locality) adopted 1 March 1956 on 82K/11, as labelled on BC Lands' map 1EM, 1915.
Spelled "Fivemile" on BC Mineral Reference Map #2, 1928. The 2-word form is used on earlier & subsequent maps & documents. Mr. F.Speed, BCLS, who surveyed in this area in 1952, advised that 'locality' is appropriate.
"From Ferguson a Government waggon road extends up the south fork of Lardeau creek to "5-Mile" .... From "5-Mile" the [Sunshine Ltd.] Company has built a very good but steep trail, zig-zagging up the hillside for some 4 miles to the [Silver Cup] mine." (BC Mines Report 1900, p.815)
