Carlin (Station) adopted 3 November 1932 on 82L/NW, at 50 50 - 119 20, as labelled on Dominion Sectional sheet 112, Sicamous, 1912, and on BC map 1EM, 1915. Form of name changed to Carlin (Locality) and application altered 29 July 1983, to 50 49 - 119 19 on 82L/14.

Carlin Post Office opened 1 November 1912; closed 31 October 1932.

After Michael Burns Carlin (1857-1934), a Golden lumberman in the 1880's and 1890's and manager of the Columbia River Lumber Company which had a siding put here, and then built several miles of track to its sawmill, operating the branch with its own locomotives. Carlin died at Kamloops 2 August 1934. (January 1962 letter, file S.3.27).

After Mike Carlin, who bought the J.P. Shaw ranch in 1907. In the next few years his brothers John, James, Frank and C.J. settled to farm in the area between Chase and Tappen.
