Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine Regional District
The local history of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine is rich and varied. The area was first inhabited by First Nations peoples, including the Tsimshian, Gitxsan, and Wet'suwet'en. The first Europeans to arrive in the region were fur traders in the early 1800s. In the late 1800s, the area became a major center for the mining and fur trading industries. In the early 1900s, the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway brought new settlers to the region. The railway helped to open up the area to economic development, and new towns and villages were established. In the 1950s, the construction of the Kitimat aluminum smelter brought even more growth to the region. The smelter created thousands of jobs and helped to transform the area into a major industrial center.
