Houston (Village) adopted 6 October 1936 on 93L, as labelled on BC map 3D, 1919 et seq. Incorporated as a Village 4 March 1957; name confirmed 21 April 1966 on 93NW. Re-incorporated as a District Municipality 1 February 1969, called District of Houston.

Named after John Houston, the first newspaper man in Prince Rupert (R.G. Large, The Skeena: River of Destiny, Mitchell Press, 1957.) Houston Post Office was opened 1 April 1914.

In 1910, as a result of a newspaper contest for a suitable name, this settlement was named after John Houston, the first newspaperman in Prince Rupert. Earlier Houston had been the first mayor of Nelson, where he had edited the Tribune.
