Origin Notes and History of Chilcotin Forest
References to Chilcotin Forest that document the origin of its place name
Ninkynee (settlement) adopted 18 January 1967, as suggested by the resident forester of the Chilcotin Forest Indian Training Centre and so-labelled on military map MCE 120, Chilcotin Training Area, 1967. Name changed to Chilcotin Forest (settlement) 8 May 1967, following local objections and a petition by Chilcotin Forest Community Club. Form of name subsequently changed to Chilcotin Forest (community).
Ninkynee is a Chilcotin word meaning "Indians own", expressing the community's nature and reason for existence. (December 1966 letter from Chilcotin Forest Indian Training Centre, file W.1.55); alternate suggestion Fort Chilcotin not acceptable as the settlement is not connected with any military installation (January 1967 letter from Director of Army Operational Services, file W.1.55).
