Origin Notes and History of Ak:tiis
References to Ak:tiis that document the origin of its place name
Ak:tiis (First Nation Village) adopted 1 April 2011, per the provisions of the Maa-nulth Treaty.
British Admiralty Chart 717, 1866 et seq, labels "Aktese, summer village" located on Village Island; the village name is spelled "Aktiss" in Walbran's British Columbia Coast Names, p.91
Ak:tiis is the preferred spelling, meaning "grassy" - this was an important summer village and gathering place for families that wintered in longhouses at the heads of the surrounding inlets; gradually the families relocated to this village year-round. (December 2010 advice from Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k:tles7et'h' First Nations.)
