Origin Notes and History of Big Bay

Yaculta Landing (Landing) adopted 7 July 1955 on C.3522, as identified in Public Works Canada document "Approach and Float; plan and description", 21 July 1953. Name changed to Big Bay (Landing) 11 December 1962 on 92K/6, to conform to entrenched local usage. Form of name changed to Big Bay (Locality) 15 December 1982 on 92 K/6.
Big Bay Post Office opened 8 May 1963, situated on Lot 1583. The Postmaster advised August 1963 that "....this is a full resort, store, fuel & steamer landing (private)...." (file S.3.44). By 30 November 1973 the post office had been moved to Lot 1026, near the Government wharf.
