Baldonnel (Post Office) adopted 22 October 1945 as listed in 1930 BC Gazetteer. Form of name changed to Baldonnel (Post Office & Station) 1 December 1960 on 94 SE. Further changed to Baldonnel (Community) 15 December 1982 on 94 A/2.

Baldonnel Post Office opened 15 March 1929, located at Parcel A, SW 1/4 Sec 30, Tp 83, R 17 W6M. Relocated January 1953 to NE 1/4 Sec 24, Tp 83, R 18, W6M, and moved again November 1962. Railway station established here, at Mile 256.0 north of Prince George (5 February 1958 letter from BCR, file 01296 Transportation)

J. Abbot, a local Justice of the Peace who began homesteading here in 1923, is said to have named this settlement after his home in Ireland. The gazetteers show no Baldonnels but several Ballydonnels in Ireland.
