Peace River Regional District Regional District
The Peace River Regional District (PRRD) in British Columbia is the largest regional district in the province, encompassing approximately twelve million hectares (119, 337 square kilometers). The PRRD was established in 1967, and its history is rich and varied. The region was first inhabited by First Nations peoples for thousands of years, and the first European explorers arrived in the early 1800s. The fur trade was the first major economic activity in the region, followed by agriculture and forestry. In the early 20th century, the discovery of oil and gas in the Peace River region led to a new wave of economic development.
