Elko (Post Office) adopted 12 December 1939 on 82SE, as labelled on BC Lands' map 1EM, 1915. Re-approved 7 December 1950 on Columbia River Basin manuscript #52. Form of name changed to Elko (community) 31 December 1982 on 82 G/6.

Elko Post Office was opened 1 August 1899 (Mrs. Holbrook, post mistress), named after the Elk River on whose bank it stands, in turn named for the elk once abundant there. CPR's Elko Station was opened in 1905?
