Origin Notes and History of Newgate

Newgate (post office, railway station & customs post) adopted 2 March 1948 on Columbia River Basin manuscript #50, as labelled on maps and identified in records from WWI-era. Location originally described as "on Linklater Creek west of Kootenay River". Form of name changed to Newgate (post office & settlement) and location description & coordinates adjusted 15 August 1962 on 82G/3. Form of name changed to Newgate (locality) 29 November 1984 on Ottawa file 203-2.
Gateway Post Office was opened 1 November 1903 and renamed Newgate Post Office 1 July 1914. Still labelled Gateway (post office & station) on BC Lands' map 1EM, published 1 February 1915. Newgate Station (GNR) later abandoned, customs post was closed, and post office was relocated about 1/2 mile northwestward to SL 11, Lot 326 - this section of Kootenay River was flooded behind Libby Dam to become Lake Koocanusa. Newgate Post Office was closed 31 October 1968.
