Baker (settlement) adopted 7 December 1950 on Columbia River Basin manuscript 54, as originally submitted February 1936 and as labelled on BC map 1EM, 1915 et seq; form of name changed to Baker (locality) 11 February 1963 on 82G/SW (file C.1.48).
Name chosen 1904 for new Post Office, after Colonel James Baker, who owned the large ranch on which Cranbrook was later built. Baker Post Office opened 1 February 1904 located on L677 just NW of Mayook Post Office; closed 15 September 1937.
