Wycliffe (Post Office & Station) adopted 4 November 1926 on Geological Survey sheet 197A, Cranbrook (file C.2.26). "Wycliffe (Post Office & Station), not Porteous" identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer. Form of name changed to Wycliffe (Post Office) 7 December 1950 on Columbia River Basin manuscript 55. Form of name changed to Wycliffe (community) 15 March 1983 on 82 G/12.
Bayard Post Office opened 1 March 1905; name changed to Wycliffe Post Office 1 March 1906. CPR station was called Porteous; renamed Wycliffeby c1920 by CPR. Post Office closed 8 March 1943 (at the time of closing, the post office had been located on Lot 6543); re-opened 15 November 1945, situated on Lot 2968.
Probably named after John Wycliffe (1324-84), a celebrated English religious reformer.
