Essondale (Post Office and Flag Station) identified in the 1930 BC Gazetteer, as labelled on BC Lands' map 2B, 1914. Confirmed 11 February 1936, as labelled on BC lands' map 2B, 1914. Form of name changed to Essondale (community)24 November 1980 on 92G/2.

"Here is also the Mental Hospital for B.C. with the Colony Farm. Named after Dr. Henry Esson Young, Provincial Secretary at the time of first building." [the 1000-acre site was purchased in 1904; cleared and dyked the following year and Colony Farm established; construction of the new hospital started in 1909; western Canada's first botanical garden and arboretum established on the Essondale grounds in 1912 by John Davidson, Provincial Botanist; the first building was opened to receive patients in 1913. The facility was renamed Riverview Hospital in 1966.]
