"Named after the old home of the McNaughton family in Scotland, Mr. McNaughton being formerly a resident on the north shore of Burrard Inlet... Dundarave [Castle] was reached by a two-oared boat. The word is derived from the Gaelic meaning "the two oars" and the letter A is pronounced as in 'have'."

This area of West Vancouver was named by early resident Russell Elliot Macnaghten (1860-1918) after Dundarave Castle, Loch Fyne, Scotland, ancestral home of the clan Macnaghten (various spellings). Macnaghten was a professor of classics at McGill University College, Vancouver, and later at University of British Columbia, who with others had purchased and subdivided land here in 1909. Dundarave Castle was reached by rowboat and the name is derived from the Gaelic meaning "the two oars." [ Dun means hill.]
