"James Johnston was the first person of European descent known to settle in the general area of Surrey that is now Fleetwood. Johnston and his five sons claimed 960 acres of land along the Johnston Road (named for the family) that stretched from New McLellan Road (Highway #10) to the Old Yale Road (Fraser Highway). In 1906, the first school in the area was built at the corner of Johnston Road (152 Street) and Burkhart Road (68 Avenue). It was constructed entirely by volunteer labour."
