Ecoole (Steamer Landing) adopted 13 August 1945 on C.3609, as originally submitted May 1931 by Hydrographic Service for C309. Form of name changed to Ecoole (locality) 12 March 1979 on 92C/14.

"...a Barkley Sound (Nootkan) word referring to the site of an old village - 'bushes on a hill' is as near as I can give." (21 April 1939 letter from W.A. Newcombe, Provincial Archives, file 34275S#4). According to Mr. George Clutesi, Nootka Indian (Sechart Band), this is a Nootka Indian word for 'place where the vegetation reaches the waters edge.' (undated information from Provincial Archives).
