The name means cold water or cold water pool. "The Niitiina-aht man to whom this was told went to Maalth-sit. Coldwater. Houses on high ground at Cold water pool." (Huu-ay-aht Place Names in the Chief Louie Nookemus historial accounts, c1964, shared September 2009 in the context of the Maa-nulth First Nations Treaty.) This is the village where some of the Huu-ay-aht people survived the January 26, 1700 tsunami.
