Clayoquot (Post Office and village) adopted in the 10th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, 30 June 1911. Identified as Clayoquot (Post Office & Settlement) in the 1930 BC Gazetteer. Form of name changed to Clayoquot (Post Office & Steamer Landing) 7 January 1947 on 92F/4. Identified as Clayoquot (Steamer Landing) in the 1966 BC Gazetteer, and as Clayoquot (Landing) in the 1973 Gazetteer Supplement. Form of name changed to Clayoquot (Locality) 15 February 1983 on 92F/4.
Clayoquot (Post Office) was opened 1 May 1890. Closed 17 July 1964.
The settlement of Clayoquot was first known to the white man as Port Cox, after John Henry Cox and Co., merchants of Canton who sent two ships to trade in the area in 1787. See also Clayoquot Sound.
