Kleecoot (Post Office) adopted 2 June 1949 as labeled on Reference Map 2A "Vancouver Island, Southerly" (1938, 1948). Post Office closed 13 March 1953. Feature type change to settlement (date not listed), as listed in 1966 Gazetteer.
"Kleecoot" is recorded as being an anglicized translation of a Nuu-chah-nulth word meaning "fork of the river" (information from Mr. George Clutesi). According to Nicholson's book "Vancouver Island's West Coast," "Kleecoot" is an Indigenous word meaning "like the head of a salkmon split open and spread out" (p. 133).
