New Denver (Town) adopted 6 April 1926 on Geological Survey sheet 200A, as labelled on BC Lands' map 1EM, 1915. Incorporated as a Village Municipality 12 January 1929; New Denver (Village) confirmed 6 October 1955. Boundary amendment effective 8 September 1993, gazette date 21 October 1993; confirmed 13 July 1993 on 82 F/14.

Formerly Eldorado City. Re-named in 1892 by R. Fitzstubbs, gold commissioner, after the prosperous mining town of Denver Colorado, in the hope that the new name would bring better luck to the miners in the vicinity. New Denver Post Office was opened 1 September 1892. See also the municipality's own website.

"When the surveyor, Perry, needed a name for the settlement in 1891, he chose El Dorado, presumably hoping that the mines would make it as rich as the legendary city of gold. The next year, when it had become clear that not gold, but silver and lead constituted the mineral wealth, a public meeting was called to decide on a more suitable name. At this meeting Thomas Latheen, who had come from Denver, Colorado, stoutly maintained that this little town would grow to be even greater than Denver, and he persuaded the citizens to adopt the name of New Denver for their settlement." ©

Silver Rush tells the story of British Columbia’s “Silvery Slocan.” In the 1890s, mining camps like Sandon, Three Forks, Whitewater and their neighbours; New Denver, Silverton, Slocan City, Kaslo and Nakusp, thrived. Once the most productive mining region in British Columbia, prospectors and miners came from Idaho, Montana and other mining centres to reap the silver harvest. Capitalists flooded in from Spokane, Seattle, Vancouver, and investment centres across North America and the world. Plummeting silver prices, labour troubles and the Klondike gold rush eventually put an end to the silver rush but the legacy of that rush endures to this day.
